Netflix has made its most explicit statement to date about its interest in venturing into virtual reality (VR) and gaming. The company has avoided questions about its entry into VR for years, and has made little progress on video games before that.

Netflix announced today that it is expanding its partnership with Shonda Rhimes. Rhimes is a prolific TV producer, and his original drama "The Bridgertons" exploded on Netflix, becoming the most-watched series ever, according to the company. The expanded partnership could pave the way for feature films, for example, or diversify Hollywood's cast and crew by investing in shows from Rhimes' production company Shondaland.
The expanded partnership also includes opportunities for exclusive production and distribution of upcoming games and VR content.
The phrase "opportunity" to deliver games and VR that "could" come true is far from a clear commitment. Still, it's the clearest sign yet of Netflix's interest in expanding into key entertainment categories, video games and the still-nascent VR.
Netflix has long shown an interest in games through licensing and merchandising partnerships, such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, an adventure in which viewers interactively select stories. was showing And in April, Netflix's COO and CPO Greg Peters hinted that Netflix's interest in gaming may be on the rise.
Peters said: "We're exploring all of these ways... We can enrich this fan base, and games are definitely a particularly interesting element of that." There is no doubt that is an important entertainment and an important means."
When it comes to VR, Netflix executives have repeatedly said they want to see how the technology develops before entering.
