橋爪氏：さて、地球儀を見ると、旧大陸と新大陸があります。旧大陸とは、昔から人間が住んでいる場所。新大陸は、そこから移民でやってきた人びとが、新しくつくった社会。ここに明確な対比があります。　植物に、外来植物というものがあります。原産地を離れて、新しい環境に拡がる。何とかタンポポみたいに、単一の植相で広い範囲に分布します。原産地に行ってみると、とても狭い範囲に細々と生育していたりする。植生に多様性があって、ひとつひとつの種の範囲は狭いのです。　それと似たようなことが、もともとの国と移民のあいだにも成り立つような気がする。ヨーロッパは、ごく狭い地域に、隣と違った言語や人種や文化の人びとがぎっしり住んでいます。その境界を動かすのはなかなか大変です。でも、いったん移民になって新大陸に移動すると、どこに行ってもドイツ人がいたり、アイルランド人がいたり、の状態になります。だから、外来植物の場合と似たところがある。新大陸の常識は旧大陸に通用しないし、旧大陸の常識は新大陸で通用しないのです。　キリスト教に関して言えば、だいたい地域ごとに、宗派が決まっています。佐藤氏：そうですね。橋爪氏：例えば、ドイツは大部分がルター派で、南側に3分の1ぐらいカトリックがいて、スイスの一部とオランダにカルヴァン派がいて、それから、フランスはユグノーがいたけど追っ払われたからカトリックで、でも、信じていない人が多くて、みたいに。場所ごとに、どんな教会があるか決まっているんです。　ところがアメリカに行ってみると、ちょっと大きい町だと、ワンセットでひと揃いの教会があります。それからヨーロッパにあまない、メソジストとかバプテストとかの教会もある。クエーカーやモルモン教や、もある。アメリカ人が考えるキリスト教と、ヨーロッパ人が考えるキリスト教は、少し違うのですね。佐藤氏：だいぶ違うと思います。

橋爪氏：つぎは、覇権国の話です。　大航海時代のあと、どの国が覇権国なのかが、国際社会にとって大事になります。そもそも、キリスト教世界には国家があるのですね。強いのと弱いのがあって、いちばん強いのが覇権国である。これは比較的、新しい考え方だと思います。大航海時代を主導したのはスペイン、ポルトガル。スペインが覇権国になりました。つぎに、オランダがそれに挑戦しました。フランスも優位を占めようとした。そのあとオランダとイギリスが争って、イギリスが覇権国になり、そのあとアメリカになった。これが世界史の流れです。覇権国という、国際社会の仕切り役があるというのが、ここ数百年の西欧世界です。　覇権国は、なぜ覇権国になるかというと、軍事力が強いからです。軍事力は、陸軍力も含みますけれど、この場合、海軍力がかなり大事ですね。海軍力は、通商を制することができるからです。　アメリカがいま、覇権を握っています。アメリカは歴史上初めて、新大陸で覇権を握った国です。新大陸の国（移民の国）なので、旧大陸の対立から距離をおきたい、という本能をもっています。ドイツとフランスが戦争をしたとする。ドイツ系アメリカ人とフランス系アメリカ人が争うと、アメリカは困ります。中立を保つ。そして、アメリカに対する忠誠を強調する。中立が、アメリカの基本的な外交姿勢だと思います。　でも、覇権国になると、そうも言っていられなくなった。仕切らなければいけません。第一次大戦では英仏の側に立ち、第二次大戦では、真珠湾攻撃を受けてようやくイギリスの側に立ち、冷戦のときにはソ連に対抗して自由主義陣営を率いた。責任の所在と世界戦略をはっきりさせるという、アメリカとしてはあんまりやりたくないことをやってきたのです。【次ページ】冷戦とは何だったのか？その背景にあるもの
