It's been 30 years.
From 1986 to 1988, I was editing a CG magazine, at which time Ivan Sutherland, the founder of CG and VR, and Jaron Lanier, the father of VR, were doing something. VR HMD (Head Mounted Display), which was recognized as such, finally came to my hand (eyes) as a completed form for consumers.
PC-9801 in the 1980s, Macs, CD-ROMs and the Internet in the 90s, iPods / iPhones in the 0s, and so on. I bought it with such a momentum that I can't read the times because I don't spend money, but I'd like to report on how far it will go in this series.
The first Oculus Rift experience was the Oculus Rift compatible software "Mikulus" from the "Hatsune Miku Passion for Materialization Exhibition" held at the Yoshihiro Yonezawa Memorial Library in January 2014. At this time, it was the first version of the development kit, DK1. I purchased DK2 in July 2014, but there were various problems such as the driver in the initial state was full of problems and it did not work, and if I thought that I supported Mac on the way, I stopped supporting it, so I thought about waiting for the product version. .. Rather, it is correct that I bought it but did nothing.
In the meantime, a consumer version with significantly improved head tracking and latency was announced on January 7, this year, and I decided this time and immediately reserved a commercial version called CV1. I was relieved to receive a reply that I could get it on March 28, while the credit card did not pass, the site was down, and the price for Japan was extremely high.
However, due to the difficulty in obtaining some parts, the arrival was significantly delayed, and an email was sent that the shipment was not scheduled until April 12. My estimated shipping date has been updated from May 9th to 19th.
On April 28, one month behind the original schedule, I received an email saying "Your order has been processed and your Rift is almost on its way! Look for a shipping confirmation email with tracking information soon." Your order will be processed and your Rift will arrive soon, so please wait for the shipping confirmation and tracking number confirmation email.
It was also debited with PayPal. After that, I believed in the words "Alienware: your order is being processed and your discount information will be available soon." And decided to wait for the ALIENWARE 20,000 yen coupon to arrive. If you don't receive the coupon, you won't be able to order the Oculus Ready PC that you've already decided on.
After that, I check the Order Status every few hours, but it doesn't work from "Processing for Shipping". In the meantime, two days passed and we entered Golden Week.
April 30th morning. Ping pong. "It is delivered from overseas"
The Oculus Rift has arrived.
Rift suddenly one morningThere is no PC that can be run. There is a gaming laptop I bought for DK2, which has far lower specs, so it would be useless to put it in, but why not give it a try?
After all it was useless. It stops in the middle of driver setup without connecting to Oculus Rift.
Even if the ALIENWARE coupon arrives, it will take another 4-5 days to ship. I don't know when this will happen.
Hmmm.
That's it. Let's go to Akiba.
I searched Akiba's gaming PC shop information on the net for about 2 hours, and as a result, I called G-Tune Garage at the same place as DK2.
We asked them to select some of the products that meet the Oculus Rift compatible specifications by phone, and decided from them. It has almost the same specifications as ALIENWARE's cheapest Oculus Ready PC, but even if you apply the coupon, it is about 20,000 yen cheaper. If you go by the evening, you can take it home. Tokyo is a good city.
Now that I have a PC, I have to check if it fits my head and glasses. According to Drikin's opening report, the glasses are tough.
I screwed my head into the headset, but it still doesn't fit with my glasses on. After checking, the size of the glasses that fits in the Oculus Rift is specified. The width of the frame must be 142 mm or less and the height must be 50 mm or less.
Do glasses also have Oculus Ready?
So, first of all, I have to make the glasses Oculus Ready. I've experienced it the first time I tried DK1, but I'm so myopia that everything looks blurry to the naked eye, or almost nothing. The DK2 came with an auxiliary lens for myopia, but the CV1 doesn't. However, even if it did, my eyes would be too bad to be useful at all.
With Hermione, the magic of "Oculus Reparo" would fix the glasses for the Oculus Rift, but reality and virtual reality aren't that easy.
The video could not be obtainedBy the way, I think Oculus Rift got a name from this spell.
Going back to reality, I decided to go to my neighborhood J! NS. I chose "AMMF15S046F96", which is the narrowest metal frame for men, and made it with the short-distance prescription that I use when looking at my Mac or iPhone (myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia). .. 5900 yen including the lens.
"Oculus Ready glasses" bought at J! NSThis frame is actually 138 mm. It keeps a reasonable distance from the Oculus Rift, so it seems that you can put it in and out without damaging the lens. You can wear it relatively smoothly by looking at the headset with the glasses on and pushing the bottom of the glasses with the thumbs of both hands.
This eyeglass frame fits into the Oculus headsetI had some difficulty setting up the PC for Oculus Rift, but now I've reached the point where I can enjoy the content. Since the opening by Drikin and the first impression article have already been published on PC USER, I would like to proceed next time with that difference feeling.
