On September 16, 2020 (local time), Facebook will hold the Facebook Connect's announcement event on the company's VR and AR technology online.Among them, we announced the project "Project Aria", a project that develops technology related to AR glasses.
Speaking of AR glasses, you may think of a type that appears in the lens part of the glasses that appears in science fiction movies, etc., but there are still many issues in realization. In particular, the method of installing all necessary sensors while maintaining the shape of general glasses is a major challenge. Therefore, he launched "Project Aria", which studies the necessary technology for AR glasses.

The project has built a research device "Project Aria Glass" with a spatial recognition sensor used in the VR headset and a video and audio collection function. This device does not display data on the lens, but can record the user's eye movements and record images seen with audio and eyes. The collected data will be used for technology development such as head tracking (technology to detect head movements), and the technique of tracking eyeballs.
Facebook is also working on a project called "LiveMaps" to make the real world 3D map.It is said that the PROJECT ARIA glass can obtain high -resolution image data, which is also useful for building "LiveMaps".
The test will start in September 2020 with the cooperation of 100 Facebook employees in San Francisco and Seattle.I would like to expect future development to realize general glasses type AR devices.
