Evaluate the unique expressiveness of works shot with a pinhole camera. Of the four public exhibitions, the Wang Hua Photo Exhibition “Box of Dreams” was selected as the most excellent exhibition for the “5th epSITE Exhibition Award”. The "epSITE Exhibition Award" is an award system that started in April 2018. This system was established with the aim of supporting artists who have high comprehensive abilities as artists in addition to their daily creative activities. Yoshihiko Ueda, a photographer and professor of graphic design at Tama Art University, and Korehiro Hayami, founder of T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO, have served as members of the selection committee since 2019. Hua Wang used a self-made pinhole camera to create her photographic works, hoping to recreate the vague memories she saw in her dreams and the times of the past. "Box of Dreams" is a photo exhibition full of originality that pursues photographic expression with a unique sensibility. Comment from Wang Hua "This was my first exhibition in a long time, and my first solo exhibition. Therefore, my first impression is that I am glad that I was able to exhibit safely. Many people were able to see my work at the venue. I was also able to hear many impressions of the work, which not only gave me the opportunity to discover new things about the work and find points for improvement, but also encouraged me to create more works in the future. So, I was able to understand and organize my work more than ever before, and by being able to see it objectively, I was able to experience a fresh feeling that I had never experienced before. I was reminded once again that it is important to choose a paper that matches the work, and that I can strongly express the aesthetic sense and emotions that I put into the work. This work was shot with a pinhole camera, which is also a primitive camera, based on the artist's thoughts and desires to bring out the primordial power of photography. I have a desire to find and touch the original form of the photograph. And the solution is sought beyond the obscure form of the subject captured by the pinhole. This work succeeds in bringing out an effect similar to the fact that the memories trapped in photographs can be vividly felt by the fading of the photographs over time. The finished work gives a glimpse of the author's unique artistry and perspective, and I felt that it was highly original in this term's exhibition, which has an excellent collection of works. The exhibition using large-format prints was also effective in highlighting its unique expression. Comment from Mr. Korehiro Hayami "In today's world, where photographs and videos are abundant and easy to shoot, it is important for future photographers how to perceive 'photography' itself. Under such circumstances, this work expresses this theme from a fundamental angle of "What are you going to do with the medium of photography?" Focusing on what can be captured, rather than what is captured in the photo, transforms visuals using a pinhole camera. What kind of things can you present to the world? It is made into a work from such a viewpoint. Shooting with a pinhole camera never has a high success rate. Since you don't know what is being shot and how, you must have sublimated it into a work by repeating many shots and post-shoot selections. Thanks to that, we have succeeded in creating a wonderful work with a unique perspective that is different from the other three works.
