One day, a lifeline (water supply, gas, electricity, etc.), which is indispensable for everyday life, often happens to us living on land due to natural disasters such as typhoons, torrential rains, and heavy snowfall.
Ships moving on the sea can be damaged by accidents such as "shike" and "collisions with large marine creatures", and suddenly deprived of lifelines such as water and food on the ship. You fall into a crisis of life.
From the desperate situation of drifting, what kind of ability is needed to be courageous, hopeful and survive? What did you say to survive?Writers, photographers, who introduced, analyzed, and explained carefully selected books from more than 70 drifting books in the east and west, and published "what drifted people ate", which focused on "food".We talked to Makoto Shiina, an essayist.(Listle: Riko Seki, Seed Planning Researcher)
* At the end of the article, Makoto Shiina's video interview is posted, so please take a look.
── In the preceding, you are called "drifting mania".Please tell us about the charm of "drifting".
Makoto Shiina (Shiina): The sea, mountains, rivers, sky, and fields are not limited, but I have been interested in what kind of people in the extreme state will respond.Since I was young, I was doing mountain climbing, diving, canoeing, and all of them were terrible. With that in mind, you can read and read in the world that some people are experiencing more tremendous state of state in the world.
The first encounter with "Drifting" was when I read Joule Verne's "Fifteen Shonen Drifting" when I was in elementary school.I was impressed that there was a book that was so exciting and excited in the world. After two years, I was happy in the last scene of the boys returning home.Since then, I have been reading and catching marine adventures in the school library. When I went to junior high school and high school, I started to explore and adventure things such as mountains, deserts, rivers, and jungles regardless of the sea.
Even in distress, distress in the sea and drifting are the most noticeable, and there are few rescue methods, so they are lonely and fierce. The drifters are determined to live, facing the sea and taking various challenges.A painful situation that you want to sympathize with, a shuraba where you live or die.The process of overcoming such things is amazing.
What you need to survive is mental strength, response ability, greed for food, courage to capture food, and guts that you never give up.That's the overall power of such things.
It is said that it is the first three days to drift and lose it.The spirit is coming. So there are many cases where you jump into the sea from yourself. If you are drifting with multiple people, if you are drifting alone, that's it.A spectacular experience that no one knows because it has not survived is sinking on the sea floor.
─ In 1782, the Sengoku ship “Shinsho Maru” from Ise to Edo was distressed off the coast of Suruga Bay, and the crew drifted to the Amchitka Island in the Arrusian archipelago, and returned to Japan over 10 years. The historical fact was introduced.Sina travels on the Siberian Track (published by Shogakukan in 1993, included in Shueisha Bunko in 1993), which traces the footprints of Kotayu Oguroya, one of the crew members. Please tell me what you felt and had a hard time on your trip.
Shiina: That was a journey of the battle against frigid.
First of all, we headed for a small machine from Alaska with the seven teams, aiming for Amchitoka Island, which was drifted by Shinsho Maru. The island is an environment where the wind blows all year round, and the trees are not growing. In fact, it took an hour to get in the way of blowing from all sides when putting on a tent. When Kotayu drifted, Amchitoka Island was a manned island where the Armt tribe lives.I always used the roots of Yuri and the Ainame, but I often thought that this island has survived for four years.
Kotayu Oguroya and others go to the city of Yakutsk, the former Soviet Union, after Kamchukka after Amchitoka Island. Our interview team also went to Yakutsk by plane from Moscow, but there is no heating on the plane to fly in extreme cold.Everyone was wearing a blanket in an airplane and endured.
The temperature of Yakutsk Airport that got off was minus 35 degrees. However, I still experienced a world of minus 59 degrees in the wilderness with the beginning of the mouth.I ran a black horse in the wilderness, but after about 30 minutes, the horses that should be black looked white.I thought it was too cold and my eyes went crazy, but if I look closely, the sweat of the horse is frozen on the hair of the whole body.So it looked like Hakuba.I thought the horse was also hard.
─ In the drifting of the polar land, seals and bears are often eaten.Do people who live in the local area eat on a daily basis?
Shiina: You can't catch a seal or a bear.I've been to a seal several times with Eskimo. The seals out of the air hole for breathing about once every 30 minutes.I hit it with a hunting gun aiming for it, but if I do not kill it in one shot, I will escape.I need a technique.
I have eaten jewye shake and highir seals, but I really like them. The seal is originally a dog.It is a creature where dogs entered the sea and become seawater animals. When dismantled, the bones of the dog -like foot come out.The liver is delicious. It tastes like a dog.I have never eaten the dog's liver ...
When you read the drifting, you can see that bears are better than seals.I ate a bear, but I didn't really like it.It's a brutal taste.
On the Arctic land, we often eat a kind of reindeer caribo. In the village of Inuit, which was taken care of about seven years ago, I made Caribo Curry with curry powder brought from Japan and caribo prepared by Inuit."Delicious! Delicious!" I was very popular and asked where I got the curry powder.
─ Steven Charahan, the author of the Atlantic Drift 76 Days (Steven Charahan, translated by Shinghei Nagatsuji, Shobo Hayakawa), feels without despair from the moment when the ship, Napoleon Solo, sank.I switched to the difficulties in front of me.Why did he be able to do such a calm action?
Shiina: I think "Atlantic Drift 76 Days" is the most selling in the world.Charahan was only about 30 years old when he drifted (1982), but he was already a celebrity in the yort sailing world. In the past, I had a two friends on a yacht journey and had a distressed experience, and I had an emergency bag packed with survival kits, assuming the possibility of an accident from the lessons. The lifesaving boat was also equipped with a six -seater one that was larger than usual.
When a yacht sinks in a collision with a whale, he jumps into the sea and removes something that is likely to be useful for emergency bags and drifting life.As long as there is no time to lament, we will solve the troubles that occur one after another and invent various things. It's a pleasant drifting to read.I think it's really a strong spirit.
Interestingly, in some cases, I was able to survive and return because I gave up from the beginning and did nothing from the beginning. It is a story of a Japanese fisherman. At the time of drifting, he had little water or food on the ship, and he just slept and preserved his physical strength.I have a fishing rod because I'm a fisherman, but I don't even fish.It was found for about 10 days and was found and survived, but it seems that the personality was relaxed and that the liver was thick.
After the "suspicious expedition", I form a "suspicious small fish fishing squad" with a friend and go fishing in the sea in Japan and overseas with about 10 to 15 people.Because I have a fishing lover, it was washed away when it was washed away, so I start fishing.Everyone has greed.
──The episode was introduced in which Charahan built a friendship with Shiira who came to the ship, but to prey mercilessly.Sila often appears in the drifting reports of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, but is it inevitable that drifting and shiira are cut off?
Shiina: Shiira has a propensity that approaches drifts like dolphins.Even if you are diving, you approach.Cute.I don't eat this because it's not drifting. It is said that Shiira catches the dead meat of the dead and washed away, and some people do not eat because they are bad luck.It is a hard and pale taste of fish to make sashimi. If you drift and have nothing to eat, you'll try to eat a shiira.
─ In 1873, 16 dragon crew members drifted, and a story of surviving through the life of an uninhabited island (16 people living on an uninhabited island, by Kunihiko Sugawa, Kodansha, Shinchosha). Why could they return safely in peace and order without being wrong?
Shiina: "Sixteen people living on an uninhabited island" was a pre -war story, and I think that some of the crew trainees, the trainee, had a spirit of military and downscape.I guess there were many negative events. However, at the time the book was published, it was a time when prior censorship before publishing was commonplace, so I think that such expressions were deleted or did not write from the beginning. That's why there is no fight for food, even though it is extreme, and everyone is happy. It was a little lie, so when I read it for the first time, I couldn't distinguish whether it was a true story or fiction.
In fact, this book was excavated and investigated by me and Saudi (nickname) of Shinchosha, and it was realized with the cooperation of Kodansha.
When I was searching for various drifting reports, I caught my eyes on an old advertising flyer with a tattered book. That was "Sixteen who lived on an uninhabited island."In a book that was treated as an outdoors that remained only in the publisher Kodansha's documentary room, we had a copy of the whole book and sent it.
I read it at once because of the fun."There is an interesting drifting report, but it smells a bit sloppy," he told Saudi Arabi of Shinchosha, and he searched the newspaper at the time in the Diet Library and found an article about dragon sleeping distress.Saudi was further investigated and contacted the relatives of the dragon sleeper crew. Finally, it turned out that the distress of Ryukemaru was historical. With the consent of the publisher Kodansha, Shinchosha was able to reissue it in a paperback book.
─ In the first installment of the book's “Suspicious Expedition” series, “Wira is a suspicious exploration squad” (published by Northern Song -sha, included in Kadokawa Bunko in 1982), Shiina himself is in Mie Prefecture. While swimming in Kamishima, I wrote an episode that drifted with my friend Hitoshi Sawano. Please tell us about the experience at that time.
Shiina: When we drifted together in Kamishima, there was no friendship.I was swimming against Sawano, and I got sick.It was already swimming. When I was young, it was good because both of them liked swimming and had physical strength, but I didn't have the knowledge of the remote stream.A remote bank is a strong flow that occurs when the waves on the coast are about to return off the coast. It was an idiot who could avoid it if it was about 50 meters away, but at that time it was a fool who did not know that.It was good that I finally got to Kamishima and helped me.
Another thing about my own drifting experience is the "planned drift" written in my novel "Moyashi" (published by Kodansha in 2003).At this time, I made a squid and went to the next island, but that was also Kiken.
It wasn't drifting, but when I was a diving beginner, I was drowned in the Izu Islands and was washed away.I jumped in a 11 -kilometer weight and jumped in.When you notice, there is no snorkel.I was able to do something if I calmed down and removed the weight, but I wanted to breathe and wanted to breathe, so I left the ship while struggling.I also had a great headache and fell asleep on the boat and couldn't move anymore.Last year I happened to go to the same sea, but I couldn't get up on a PTSD on a boat.I was really scared.
── Mr. Shiina has been procuring food locally at the outdoor camp party, “East Japan anything Ketobasukai”, “Nohahaha Corps”, and “Small Fishing Corps”, but the most delicious. What is the thing?
Shiina: The most delicious was the mackerel I ate on the island of Izu Nanashima. As soon as you put out the rod, you can catch the fish. Both mackerel and bonito were unlimited fishing.I can catch so much that I have no time to rest. The mackerel sashimi was used as a hand -rolled sushi, drinking canned beer, and ate so much that I got tired. That's why I can't stop fishing or outdoor camp.
─ The era of ordinary people can go to the universe and deep sea for travel.A new "distress" and "drifting" experience with the universe and the deep sea will be published in the future. As a "drifting mania", please tell us your expectations for such a new "drifting post" and your willingness to adventure to your universe and deep sea.
Shiina: I'm a claustrophobia. So, no matter how much money you get, you don't want to go to space or deep sea.Even if you just think about it, you will be stuffy.
In the age of going to the universe and deep sea, accidents will occur and exploration notes will be written. But you can read only the person who finally returned.Whether you are in space or deep sea, you can't tell people unless you return safely and bring back records and memories.
While the survivors are "drifting" and "distress", there should be many records that are sleeping around the world.Drifers and victims who were lucky and died boldly, were driven into tremendous situations.I don't think we should forget that there are those people.(Configuration: Hiromi Kurihara)
